One student was killed and three injured during a school shooting Wednesday morning at Freeman High School near Spokane, WA., according to the Los Angeles Times.
According to police, the alleged shooter was detained and it appears he acted alone. All Spokane Public Schools, the Central Valley School District and the Mead District were put on lockdown, the report said.
After the shooter was arrested and classrooms were inspected at the school with 327 students, Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer declared, “the threat from the shooter has been eliminated.”
Classes just started around 10 a.m. when the suspect began opening fire, the report said. Students ran to avoid the shooter and some were taken to safety at nearby elementary and middle schools.
“At Freeman elementary currently,” one student tweeted with a picture of classmates sitting on a classroom floor. “I am a junior, evacuated from the high school. At least four shots.”
Parent quickly arrived at the school in the small suburban town of Rockford where police and emergency vehicles were seen all over the streets, the report said.
Gov. Jay Inslee described the shooting as “heartbreaking” and said he was “grateful for the service of school staff and first responders working to keep our students safe.”
Authorities from Sacred Heart Hospital near Spokane announced three victims were taken to the medical center and are in satisfactory condition.
The identities of the victims and the suspect are still unknown, according to the Los Angeles Times.
