Biafra: We’re Working On Referendum For Igbo Exit From Nigeria – Arewa Youth

Yerima Shettima, President of Arewa Youth Consultative Forum

Yerima Shettima, Arewa Youth leader, has claimed a Biafra referendum is in the works to usher Igbo out of Nigeria.

“We still insist on the call for a referendum for the Igbo to leave the country; we are working on it,” said Yerima in an interview with PUNCH.

The Arewa Youth leader said this following withdrawal of the October 1 quit notice handed Igbo to quit northern Nigeria.

But despite the withdrawal, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) had warned southerners against heeding to the group’s advice.

“We urge all southerners in the core north to return home before October 1 as history will most definitely repeat itself.

“Southerners were massacred in the pogroms of 1966 and 1967 after similar assurances were issued then that people should remain in the north,” IPOB had said.

In reaction, Yerima said “There is no need for them (Igbo) to go anywhere. They can ignore IPOB; they are not even popular.

“We have a culture; we have a background and when we say something we stand by it. We are not like IPOB that talks from both sides of the mouth.

“Before we arrived at our decision, we consulted widely. Our people are not violent. We have leaders and when they speak, we obey them. It is part of our culture.”

Yerima said, however, that Arewa Youth’s insistence for a referendum to be called was for it “to be enshrined in the constitution.”

BIAFRA: Yerima said, Our people are not violent. We have leaders and when they speak, we obey them. It is part of our culture.”

A statement by the Media and Publicity Secretary of IPOB, Emma Powerful, said that efforts geared towards the first referendum is gathering unstoppable momentum with dates for the exercise to be announced imminently, adding that 40 million ballot papers were being printed and readied for distribution to every clan and village in Biafraland for all adults over the age of 18 to express their preference. Powerful said, “Through this age old democratic process, IPOB shall return power to the  long suffering...

Russian jets make first foray into south-west Syria.

The US has warned Syrian rebels in the south-west of the country they should not expect military support to help them resist a major government offensive. The message from Washington comes as Russian jets struck an opposition-held town on Sunday in the first air cover provided by Moscow to an expanding Syrian army offensive in the strategic area bordering Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The US message sent to heads of the Free Syrian Army said Washington wanted to make clear that “you should not base your decisions on the assumption or expectation of a military intervention by us”. The Syrian army began ramping up its assault last week in order to recapture the area. Washington had warned the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, and his Russian allies that violations of a “de-escalation” zone agreed by the US and Russia last year would have “serious repercussions” and pledged “firm and appropriate measures”.
