Biafra: Restructuring is the best way to Go – Ngige

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, has endorsed the growing calls for the restructuring of the Nigerian polity.

His stance is against the All Progressives Congress (APC’s) anti-restructuring position.

Ngige stated on Thursday that Nigeria must restructure for the country to move forward.

The minister spoke at the graduation of the pilot programme of the Abia State Education for Empowerment Programme (E4E) in Umuahia, the state capital.

He said that power devolution had become very imperative if states in the federation will survive and advised opponents of power devolution to think twice.

His words: “Some people are afraid of power devolution thinking it is resource control, but it is not resource control. It means states working hard to develop at their pace; and if you work harder you will enjoy better.”

Ngige stated that power devolution would engender competitiveness among states of the federation instead of the current practice where states go cap-in-hand to Abuja for financial allocation every month.

The former Anambra State Governor emphasised that contrary to the perception in some quarters, the Executive arm of government was interested in power devolution and urged everybody to embrace the idea

Russian jets make first foray into south-west Syria.

The US has warned Syrian rebels in the south-west of the country they should not expect military support to help them resist a major government offensive. The US message sent to heads of the Free Syrian Army said Washington wanted to make clear that “you should not base your decisions on the assumption or expectation of a military intervention by us”. The Syrian army began ramping up its assault last week in order to recapture the area. Washington had warned the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, and his Russian allies that violations of a “de-escalation” zone agreed by the US and Russia last year would have “serious repercussions” and pledged “firm and appropriate measures”. The US ambass...
